The video of Maya Rudolph conversing with David Letterman in 2009 has recently emerged in the wake of her confession that she felt degraded and ashamed due to her interaction with him.
The comedian, who is now 50 years old, could be seen in a tape from her first visit on The Late Show with David Letterman getting an apology from the host of the late-night talk show, who is now 75 years old after he mispronounced her name before she stepped out on stage.
She expressed her gratitude to Dave by resting her hand on top of his while she sat in her hostess chair. Rudolph recounted the embarrassing incident in an appearance with the Wall Street Journal magazine released on Friday.
The Bridesmaids star reflected that she did not have a pleasant time during the experience. He misspelled my name, and I just sat there like, I’ve been in love with you my whole life, even if you spelled it wrong. So the result is that my heart is broken. And I am, sitting here in complete and utter shame and humiliation.
Rudolph claimed she was utterly at a loss on how to respond to the circumstance at the time. She came clean and admitted, “I had no idea how to come up with something witty to say.” The muscles of my public persona needed to be developed more.
She told the media source that she had significantly improved her ability to handle public engagements since that time, adding, “When I’m embarrassed, I try to be hilarious.”
In response to Page Six’s request for comment, a representative for Letterman did not immediately react. In another part of the conversation, Rudolph discussed why she does not consider herself a celebrity, even though she has spent decades working in the public eye.
The actress, who shot to prominence after appearing on Saturday Night Live in 1999, revealed that although she is aware that people recognize her and that she is working as an actor, she does not consider herself a celebrity. “Celebrity” to her today means something different than it did in the past.
