Ahmed Nur Said Elmi is now an overnight celebrity, and his Instagram pictures are in the headlines thanks to US President Donald Trump.
It is not the first time that Trump has landed in hot water due to insensitive comments, but many have pointed out that he might have crossed the line this time, even for his own standards.
In a recent statement regarding his political rival, Ilhan Omar, Trump accused Omar of marrying her own brother.
Trump was careful not to directly allege that this was the truth, instead explaining that “he had heard a lot about it” but at the same time knew nothing concrete.
The former reality TV star turned president told a reporter the following about Elmi and Omar’s brother rumor: “Well, there’s a lot of talk about the fact that she was married to her brother. I know nothing about it.”
Trump added: “I hear she was married to her brother. You’re asking me a question about it. I don’t know, but I’m sure there’s somebody who will be looking at that.”
Trump was likely referencing earlier rumors that were circulating several years ago, which accused Omar of pretty much the same thing.
The allegations stem from the fact that Omar’s father shares the same family name as the father of her second husband, which likely fueled the initial confusion.
However, some commenters on the incident have pointed out that it likely does not take too much investigation to figure out that the two do not have any blood relation.
Omar has refrained from addressing Trump’s remarks, much like she has in other cases in the past when the president has attempted to attack her.
In 2018, a rep for Omar did address the matter by saying: “Insinuations that Ahmed Nur Said Elmi is my brother are absurd and offensive.”
This is far from the first time that Trump has made inflammatory remarks about a rival politician, although some seem to disagree with his attitude at this point, even including some of his own supporters.
It does seem like attention towards Trump has been shifting towards the negative in recent times, and it is not clear if this is going to slow down leading up to the 2020 elections.
Did Omar marry her bother?
