Alan Alda will be honored with the SAG Life Achievement Award for career achievement and humanitarian accomplishment on Sunday, January 27, 2019, when the special airs on TBS and TNT. The son of actor Robert Alda, Alan created his own path to stardom and soon became one of the most respected and beloved actors in the field.

Alda began his career in theater and within a decade would be nominated for a Tony award.  Though he acted in a number of television series and movies, it wasn’t until he landed the role of Capt. Benjamin Franklin ‘Hawkeye’ Pierce on the hit series MASH that he would craft the character that would become his legacy. MASH ran from 1972 until 1983 and was one of the most popular television shows in history. The finale gripped people from old to young and left people in tears.

It’s no surprise that Alan Alda will receive the SAG Live Achievement award as he has been winning awards since the onset of his career. In 1969, Alda was honored with a Golden Globe nomination for the most promising newcomer. In 2004, Alan Alda was nominated for a best supporting Oscar for his role of Senator Ralph Owen Brewster in Martin Scorsese’s The Aviator.

SAG released a statement explaining why they selected Alda for the honor. They referred to Alda’s record-setting television career, his far-reaching expansion into film, how he has authored three books, launched the nonprofit Alan Alda Center for Communicating Science at Stony Brook University in New York, and continues to be an in-demand actor who was nominated for an Oscar, Emmy, and Tony in the same year.

“Nominated and voted on by members of the SAG-AFTRA National Honors and Tributes Committee, the Life Achievement Award is bestowed for outstanding achievement in fostering the best ideals of the acting profession. The recipient of this award is a well- established performer who has contributed to improving the image of the acting profession and has a history of active involvement in humanitarian and public service endeavors.”‘
