Amber Heard Reflects On Coming Out To Religious Parents “They Couldn’t Process It”

Amber Heard is reflecting on what it was like coming out to her very religious parents. It was not easy, and they could not process her new relationship with a woman.

The Aquaman actress was on the Making Change On and Off the Screen panel at SXSW over the weekend. She got very candid about her parents’ difficulty to understand her being bisexual. They could not comprehend anything outside the binary system being negative or positive.

“I am from Austin, Texas. My dad is out of central casting Texan. Good Southern man, and I was raised in a religious home. And being an outspoken lesbian, atheist, vegetarian, I remember when I told them about my relationship, that I was in love with this woman, and at the beginning of that it was just tears, tears,” the 32-year-old explained.

While speaking on the panel, Heard admitted during that struggling time, she did not give in and she was not open to believing her family strife was an issue or problem. The blonde beauty did not act or display any signs of negativity.

However, just because it was a struggle for her parents to accept or understand her relationship with a woman at first doesn’t mean they never came around.

Five years later Heard was honored with what she referred to as a “gay award.” The actress asked her parents to come to witness her honor, and they did. It was a journey, but her parents’ attitude did change

“I asked my parents to drive out to Dallas. And I see them sitting front and center, and here I am getting this ‘gay’ award. My parents in five years, look at the journey. Attitudes and hearts can change,” she said as she recalled the moment of happiness for her family.

Amber Heard came out publicly in 2010, at a GLADD event, right in the middle of her four-year relationship with girlfriend Tasya van Ree. They split in 2012. Three years later she wed Johnny Depp, but their union only lasted 15 months.

Everyone knows their romantic relationship was turbulent at best and the ramifications are still being felt by both of them today. Their drama is still unfolding between Depp and Heard, despite their divorce being final a couple of years ago.
