American Idol is currently in its second season on ABC, but the ratings indicate the singing competition has passed its prime. With the numbers at an all-time low, could the series be in danger of being canceled?

According to Radar Online, Idol has lost more than a million viewers in the past year – dropping from an average of 7.2 million to 6 million – and an insider says that “the show is dead.” To make things worse, the recent episode that featured the contestants singing Disney songs recorded the lowest numbers the show has ever seen. The episode drew just five million viewers, which is an all-time low on both ABC and Fox.

When American Idol hit TV screens in 2002, it was an instant success and produced superstars like Kelly Clarkson, Carrie Underwood, Jennifer Hudson, and Adam Lambert. But, as more and more TV talent competitions hit the airwaves and time went on, the show started to lose its appeal.

In 2016, Idol’s time on Fox came to an end, but it didn’t take long for ABC to show interest. Last year, the Disney-owned network launched a reboot with an entirely new panel of judges – Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie.

However, the reboot has struggled from day one. Not only did the premiere episode air opposite the special O.J.: The Lost Confession – which was a ratings hit – but it’s also had to compete with The Voice on NBC and The Four on Fox.

“The producers and crew are already sending out their resumes,” snitched a source. “Even judge Katy Perry is ready to go back to focusing on her music career.”

The recent “Meet Your Finalist” episode of American Idol only pulled 5.42 million viewers and had a 0.9 rating in the uber-important adults 18 to 49 demographic. At the same time, The Voice pulled in a 1.2 rating and 7.49 million viewers and won the night.

Despite the low TV ratings, American Idol has one of their most-talented Top Tens in recent memory. Favorites Alejandro Aranda and Laci Kaye Booth have racked up tens of millions of views on YouTube.
