Amy Schumer Says She Was 'Empowered' By Going Back To Work After Giving Birth

Ever since she gave birth to her son Gene Attell five months ago, comedian Amy Schumer has been extremely candid on social media about how motherhood has changed her life, and she’s also been open about her fears of returning to work and trying to balance her career and family life. Now that she has officially ended her maternity leave and is back to work on her podcast Amy Schumer Presents: 3 Girls, 1 Keith, the 38-year-old says that it’s been hard, but it’s made her stronger.

“It’s empowering. It’s like you get a piece of yourself back, but it is hard,” Schumer recently told People Magazine. “I’m just so fortunate, you know? ‘Cause a lot of people have it a lot harder.”

Schumer has been busy with the Spotify podcast – which just began its fourth season – and filming for a new project, while also adjusting to life as a new mom to Gene, who she shares with husband, Chris Fischer. Schumer says that now that she is a mom, it has opened her eyes to new issues, like proper maternity care and paid maternity leave, that she wants to shine a spotlight on.

The Trainwreck star explained that Christy Turlington Burns started the Every Mother Counts charity to raise money for women to have a midwife or doula with them when they give birth because sometimes they are all alone and go home by themselves.

“I have so much privilege,” says Schumer. “And, it was still hard for me to get back to work.”

Schumer recently told her fans on Instagram that she was feeling strong and like a human being with interests, ambitions, and goals, but she has cried from missing her son. She added that it’s mostly good to be back, and the breaks energize her to be a better mom and to appreciate their time together even more.

Schumer says that giving birth was the “most terrifying” thing she’s ever had to do, but it was completely worth it. She added that her pregnancy was so hard, and she was “very ready” to meet her son.

Ahead of the podcast’s Tuesday premiere, Schumer promised the first episode would feature a discussion about her cesarean section, and one of her first guests would be late night host and former Saturday Night Live star Seth Meyers.

The comedian hosts the show along with friends Bridget Everett, Rachel Feinstein, and Ketih Robinson, and they discuss everything from politics to NSFW subjects. Schumer says she has enjoyed talking unfiltered, and it has been “really liberating and educational.”

Amy Schumer and her podcast co-hosts record the show in Martha’s Vineyard, which is Fischer’s hometown, and that has allowed her to bring Gene to work.
