Ben Affleck Reveals That He's Been Taking Anti-Depressants For 26 Years

Earlier this week, Ben Affleck opened up to the New York Times about his very painful and regrettable divorce with Jennifer Garner, explaining that it was one of his life’s biggest mistakes. During his chat with the outlet, Affleck explained that drinking played a crucial role in exacerbating their pre-existing marital troubles.

Affleck has since been very candid about his struggles with mental health, including the fact that he’s been on anti-depressants for the last 26 years.

Page Six recently picked up on a Good Morning America segment with the actor in which Ben revealed that medication had been “very helpful” to him.

Although, admittedly, Mr. Affleck stated they sometimes come with side effects that can be hard to manage. While on GMA, Ben revealed that he often “gets depressed,” and has to take medication to combat his tendency to feel sad.

According to Affleck, he first started taking them when he was 26-years-old and has taken a variety of kinds since he first started in the 1990s. Affleck said to the hosts of the show that many of them come with bizarre side effects, for instance, suddenly gaining 60 pounds.

The actor joked that when a patient goes to their doctor to say how they put on so much weight, the doctor says in response, “well, you put on a little weight.” Interestingly, when Ben was 25-years-old, he had just won an Oscar for his work alongside Matt Damon in Good Will Hunting.

Since then, Ben has visited a rehabilitation facility a number of times over the preceding decades. He was also photographed stumbling out of a nightclub last year. Ben later admitted that he had relapsed into drinking again.

Later, he admitted to it and said he let it “slip,” but wouldn’t let it happen again. These days, he has found additional inspiration to stay sober due to his children, including Violet, Samuel, and Seraphina. Affleck’s split with Jennifer Garner back in 2015 was one of the most high profile breakups of that year. They finalized their divorce in 2018.
