Beyoncé Cried After Kayne West Ruined Taylor Swift’s 2009 VMA’s Acceptance Speech

It has been ten years since Kanye West ruined Taylor Swift’s 2009 Video Music Awards speech.

The controversial rapper infamously stormed the stage when Swift won Best Female Video. West took the mic from Swift, in the middle of her acceptance speech. He felt Beyoncé ‘Single Ladies’ video deserved the award more than Swift’s ‘You Belong With Me.’ West took the moment to announce Beyoncé had the best video of the year.

Bey sat in the audience looking so stunned and uncomfortable. West left the stage with a shocked Swift standing there. Although the audience gave the young singer a standing ovation, the damage was done.

"Yo, Taylor, I'm really happy for you, I'ma let you finish, but Beyoncé had one of the best videos of all time!"

As the 10th anniversary of the shocking moment approaches, producers spoke to Billboard about what viewers at home missed that day.

Former president of Viacom Media Networks and Logo Group, Van Toffler shared a couple of interesting details with the magazine. When he went backstage to find Scott Borchetta, to have him convince Swift not to leave the awards show he found Beyoncé, crying. The singer was with her dad Mathew Knowles.

“I walk behind the stage, and sure enough there is Beyoncé and her dad, and she is crying, She was like, ‘I didn’t know this was going to happen, I feel so bad for her,” Queen Bey said.

As fans know Beyoncé won Video of the Year later in the show and called Swift to the stage, so she could deliver her interrupted speech. The idea came from Toffler, who had to quickly find a way to keep both Bey and Swift at the show after West’s disruption.

“At some point, I let her know that she was probably going to be up on the podium at the end of the show for an award. And wouldn’t it be nice to have Taylor come up and have her moment then? I had to indicate to her that she needed to stay, and perhaps this is a way to have this come full circle and let Taylor have her moment. I would normally not say anything, but I had two crying artists,” Toffler shared with Billboard.

After a lot of finagling, he convinced both ladies to stay, and fans know what happened next. There are two major things fans weren’t aware of until now.

James Montgomery, an MTV correspondent at the time revealed Pink scolded West severely when he came back from the stage. Montgomery couldn’t hear the conversation, but Pink’s hands and face said it all, especially her middle finger.

The former correspondent also shared West and his date Amber Rose, were asked to leave the awards show after his disruption. The rapper was not too thrilled when he was escorted out of Radio City Music Hall.
