At the moment, Mrs. Cardi B is in the top spot at the upcoming 2019 Billboard Music Awards as she stands with a whopping 21 nominations in total. NBC and Dick Clark Productions announced today that the 26-year-old superstar would be up for a few awards, including top artist, top female artist, as well as the top Billboard 200 album.
Her debut effort, Invasion of Privacy, spawned several hits, including “I Like It,” as well as her song with Maroon 5, “Girls Like You.” Cardi received two nominations for categories like the top-selling song and top collaboration.
Following closely behind is Drake and Post Malone, who both have a considerable 17 nominations. Ariana Grande and Travis Scott also received 12 nominations. Regarding the actual event, Kelly Clarkson, the original American Idol, will host the ceremony on the 1st of May.
There’s no question that rap and hip-hop music has been the dominant cultural zeitgeist in the last 5 years, approximately, with 2018 and 2019 seeing a large number of rap artist nominations, including Drake, Travis Scott, Cardi B, and XXXTentacion.
Another artist to receive unlikely nominations was the legendary rock band, Queen, who, on account of the smash hit film, Bohemian Rhapsody, has moved into the spotlight for the second time in their career. Ironically, this news comes after Cardi B admitted to drugging and robbing a man in an Instagram Live video.
Now, the rapper who can do no wrong has been the subject of some scrutiny on social media, with many users pointing out the double standard, notably, that if a man did such a thing, there would be extreme consequences, both professionally and personally.
Thus far, the controversy hasn’t spawned any intense actions on part of Cardi B, her management, or her record label. It’s unclear if the allegations will affect her position as a nominee at the Billboards, but at the moment, it looks doubtful. Cardi later explained her actions as her doing what was necessary to survive.
Before her time on the show, Love And Hip-Hop, Cardi B was an exotic dancer. Her time on the Vh1 series established her as an undeniable figure.
