Despite being perhaps her most famous catchphrase, and that says a lot when it comes to Cardi B, her request to trademark ‘Okurr’ has been denied! The female emcee was planning on using it for future business related reasons but it doesn’t look like she’ll be making any money off of it.
Court documents obtained by The Blast reveal that ‘Okurr’ is actually a much more common catchphrase than the rapper had thought.
U.S. Patent and Trademark officials argued that it is a ‘widely-used commonplace expression’ after having been used by the Kardashians as well as many of Cardi’s fans over the years.
Kendall, Khloe and Kourtney all used ‘Okurr’ on several episodes of Keeping Up with the Kardashians back in 2017!
The Blast also mentions that even some of Cardi’s fans had filed trademark requests for the expression before the artist got the chance to do it.
And that’s not all! USPT officials also argued that it ‘does not function as a trademark or service mark to indicate the source of applicant’s goods and/or services.’
Cardi tried her best to make it work since she filed two separate applications for the word, written with 2 as well as with 3 Rs.
The filing took place back in March and she was apparently planning on putting ‘Okurr/Okurrr’ on products such as cups and posters as well as on pieces of clothing such as shirts, hoodies and even pants, part of a future clothing line.
Cardi explained the use of the phrase in April while on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, making for a very funny episode.
‘It’s like a cold pigeon in New York City. It depends on the situation that you are in. Like if someone checks someone [out] it’s like ‘Okurrr,’’ she explained to the host who tried his best to follow along.
