Reality star and home remodeler Chip Gaines has finally revealed why he and his wife, Joanna, ended their hit HGTV show Fixer Upper. In his new memoir Capital Gaines, he says that the reason was simple – they were tired.

When they were filming Fixer Upper, Chip and Joanna were also running their Magnolia empire and were the parents of four children, and the 44-year-old says that he and his wife needed “some good old-fashioned rest.” He says walking away was “truly bittersweet.”

Chip and Joanna announced in 2017 that Fixer Upper would end after five seasons, and not long after they decided to call it quits on the show, the couple found out that they were expecting baby number five. They welcomed a baby boy named Crew in June of last year.

“We had no idea what was coming and how exhausted we really were,” Chip wrote in the new book.

The couple has continued to build their Magnolia brand since their show ended. They have the famous Magnolia Market at the Silos in Waco, Texas, that features shops, a bakery, food trucks, and a garden. Joanna has her Hearth & Hand brand of home decor and bedding that fans can find at Target, and they also opened a restaurant in Waco.

Of course, their most important job is being the parents of five children, and Joanna recently revealed that the couple encourages their kids to express their creativity instead of sitting in front of a screen.

In the latest issue of Southern Living, Joanna told Jenna Bush Hager that her family does not own a television, and they have strict rules when it comes to the iPad.

“Our rule for the iPad is that the kids can use it a certain amount of time every other day,” Joanna said. “It’s contingent on them doing their chores and homework. I try hard to make it not the thing they look forward to every day. I don’t want them focusing on that.”

In addition to baby Crew, 7 months, Chip and Joanna are also the parents of Drake, 14, Ella Rose, 12, Duke, 9, and Emmie Kay, 8.

Joanna says that motherhood “means everything,” and for her, it’s all about finding ways to connect and showing her kids she loves them.

The 40-year-old says that she also wants to be a person who encourages other moms, and she got that motivation from the surprise of having Crew, who arrived almost eight years after baby number four.
