Chrissy Metz and the rest of the This Is Us cast wrapped filming on Season 4 well before the COVID-19 pandemic shut down nearly every production in the TV and film industry. The actress says that when they finally do get back to shooting after their indefinite hiatus comes to an end, she believes the novel coronavirus could be part of future episodes.

Speaking with Q.10, Metz – who plays Kate Pearson on the time-jumping tearjerker – said that she hasn’t discussed this topic with showrunner Dan Fogelman yet, but she doesn’t think the NBC drama could avoid addressing the pandemic and its aftermath.

“I haven’t talked to anybody yet, but we are a contemporary show so we have to address it,” said Metz. “Our show is sort of a blueprint on how to go through anxiety and issues and loss and grief.”

When TV shows do go back into production after the lockdown ends, there is no doubt that some shows will have to decide whether or not to include COVID-19 in their storylines considering the impact it has had on the world.

Of course, TV shows have their own universes that aren’t necessarily the same as the contemporary world we live in. After the terrorist attacks on September 11, 2001, multiple series that were set in New York chose to ignore the catastrophic event instead of addressing it in any way.

This Is Us is a non-linear drama that jumps to different time periods to tell the story of different generations of the Pearson family. The ensemble cast includes Metz, Mandy Moore, Milo Ventimiglia, Sterling K. Brown, Chris Sullivan, Justin Hartley, Jon Huertas, and Susan Kelechi Watson.

Metz recently revealed on Instagram that the ensemble got together for a video chat so they could touch base with each other while in between seasons.

“Technology is out here bringing joy and gratitude, y’all! So happy to see these beautiful faces!” Metz wrote in the caption of her post.

According to E! News, the cast recently teamed up with Frontline Foods to pay for meals for hospital staff on the front lines of the pandemic in Pittsburgh, the city where This Is Us takes place. They also helped workers in medical centers in the Philadelphia area.
