Chrissy Metz Teases This Is Us Fans With A 'New Wife' Theory For Toby

Season 3 of This Is Us came to an end last month, and fans are already having a hard time dealing with the hiatus. Six months is a long time to wait to find out what happens next in the Pearson family, but the final few minutes of the Season 3 finale definitely gave fans a lot to talk about. There are so many questions about what the future holds for the Pearsons, and star Chrissy Metz is already teasing fans about the fate of her character, Kate, and her husband, Toby (Chris Sullivan).

In the Season 3 finale, the story flashed forward to what appeared to be about 15 to 20 years in the future, and while the mystery of Randall (Sterling K. Brown) and Beth’s (Susan Kelechi Watson) relationship was solved (they are still married!), the scene brought a ton of new questions.

Is Rebecca (Mandy Moore) on her deathbed? What illness is she suffering from? Why is Nicky (Griffin Dunne) at her side? Where was Miguel (Jon Huertas)? Who is the mother of Kevin’s (Justin Hartley) son? And, where is Kate?

According to Entertainment Weekly, the speculation is that Kate and Toby are facing some serious problems, especially since we saw him in a previous flash-forward without his wedding ring and laying depressed in bed. During that scene, Randall called Toby and told him he needed to be somewhere because “she wants you to be there.”

Then, in the finale, when Toby shows up to Kevin’s house to join the family, he says that he “just talked to Jack, and they’re on their way.” Is Jack with Kate? Or, has Kate passed away?

When Metz was asked about Kate’s future, she said there is always hope in This Is Us, and creator Dan Fogelman told her that when people ask her about Kate, just tell them that they will find out answers in Season 4.

The major focus for viewers is the “their” in Toby’s statement to the family, and why he was so vague.

“It could be a new wife,” says Metz coyly. “You never know.”

Brown revealed that they shot the ending with a few different alternatives, but he wouldn’t go into too much detail. And, Fogelman said they created a lot of questions that need answers over the next three seasons.

“Kate’s not there, Toby seems out of place at this family reunion, clearly a bit estranged in some way, and we don’t know why. So yeah, I would say on multiple fronts there’s reason for concern. There’s certainly a tremendous amount of the middle for us to now fill in, in the next season or two,” said Fogelman.

The saddest theory is that Kate is not alive in the future scene, and Metz says that she has heard that. But, she says there is no reason for fans to believe that Kate died.

“Dan has assured me everything is okay. And here’s the thing: should she have passed away, Jack has passed away…. It’s not linear. So we really don’t need answers, folks,” Metz said during a recent Tonight Show appearance.

Metz also talked about possible Easter eggs or clues hidden in the flash-forward, revealing that they omitted something great she thought was going to happen. But it will happen early in Season 4.

Chrissy Metz is currently starring in the new faith-based film Breakthrough, and This Is Us will return to NBC with new episodes in September.
