Counting On star Jessa Duggar is the proud mom of three kids whom she shares with her husband, Ben Seewald – Spurgeon, 4, Henry, 3, and Ivy Jane, 1. And, she is looking for some parenting advice about how to handle her oldest son now that he has reached the age of trying to avoid his afternoon nap.
Duggar took to Instagram over the weekend to ask her 2.2 million followers about when they gave up afternoon naps with their kids. The 27-year-old posted a pic of Spurgeon sitting on the couch next to a stack of books, and in the caption she gave some context to what she has been dealing with recently.

“To nap or not to nap— that is the question,” wrote Duggar. “Our 4.5 yr old will still fall asleep for an afternoon nap, but that usually makes bedtime a bit later. Sometimes we skip naptime and bump bedtime up.”
Duggar explained that since her boys share a room, she often puts Henry down for his nap first. Then, when he goes to sleep, it’s Spurgeon’s turn to go down. She says that this makes the process easier because the boys aren’t talking to each other or keeping each other from falling asleep.
The reality star says that when the room is quiet, Henry usually goes to sleep pretty quickly. To keep things quiet, Duggar says she told Spurgeon to “grab a book and read for five minutes while Henry is falling asleep.” But, when she came back, she found that Spurgeon had transferred “an entire shelf’s wroth of books” to the couch beside him.
“‘I’m going to read ALL OF THESE BOOKS!’” he declared. 📚👦🏻 I thought he’d employed a pretty creative tactic for getting out of a nap. How could I say no to that? 🥰 “ wrote Duggar, who added that Spurgeon didn’t get a nap that day.
Instead, Jessa Duggar says that she and Spurgeon sat on the couch reading the books, while Henry and Ivy Jane napped. Even though he didn’t make it through the entire stack, Duggar says that Spurgeon did sit quietly for a long time while looking through the books, and that was impressive.

Fans responded with their advice about naps, and Jessa’s sister Jill commented that her son Israel is trying to avoid naps, too.
“Israel is doing the same thing these days lol,” wrote Jill. “Always strategizing how to stall for time.”
New episodes of Counting On return to TLC on Tuesday, June 30.
