Reported first by Page Six, Criss Angel’s 5-year-old son, Crisstopher Sarantakos, is fighting cancer now for the second time. During a conversation with TMZ on Tuesday, the magician revealed that his son was in “remission,” and had a relapse earlier this month. The 5-year-old was taken to the hospital on Monday.
At the age of 2, doctors revealed that Johnny Crisstopher had acute lymphoblastic leukemia. The 2-year-old had been in treatment until this fall. On the 27th of September, Shaunyl Benson, Johnny’s mother, took to her IG account to state their child was officially cancer-free.
“Our little Superman had his port taken out today,” she wrote in the caption of the video taken at the medical facility. At the moment, nobody knows when the 51-year-old and his 27-year-old girlfriend learned about his cancer for the second time.
Although, what is known is that Criss has been raising money to fight against pediatric cancer. Speaking with TMZ, Criss explained that he and his team were going to try and raise $5 million at Planet Hollywood, and would reveal more details later in the year.
In 2017, Criss Angel was in the headlines for another reason, except this time, related to his act. As reported by Andy Cooper back in March of 2017, Criss had to go to the ER following a mid-air straightjacket move that didn’t go as planned.
At this show at the Luxor in Las Vegas, Criss tried to do a mid-air track and he ended up hanging upside down while in the straightjacket. He wasn’t able to complete the trick and also lost consciousness which was not part of the performance.
After the trick went wrong, Criss emphasized that while the audience’s perception of reality and illusion is strained and distorted, there are very real dangers when performing.
Due to his eagerness to get back to performing career, Angel signed a release waiving liability and asked for an MRI scan in addition to a stay at the hospital to make sure everything was ok. Just twenty-four hours later, Angel did the same move but did it successfully.
