David Ayer Director Of Suicide Squad Said His 'Heart Breaks' For Jared Leto Regarding Fan Reception To The Joker

Fans of The Joker and more specifically, Suicide Squad, know that Jared Leto’s portrayal of the iconic villain wasn’t a hit with everyone. The reaction to Jared’s version of Joker was loved by some and hated by others, especially for the way he introduced hip-hop elements to the character.

Regardless of the purported merits of the role, the director of the film, David Ayer, recently said that he felt bad for Jared. David claimed his “heart breaks” for Jared Leto for a number of reasons, especially considering the way the image of Joker was used as a marketing tactic, despite the fact he was hardly featured in the film.

Upon the first impression, many fans weren’t happy with the initial look of Jared’s rendition of the character. Even when Jared was first announced as the actor for the movie, some people online questioned the choice.

As it was noted above, one of the biggest problems with Joker in Suicide Squad was the fact that he barely got any screen time. Following the movie’s release, even Jared himself said he felt disappointed and “tricked” into joining a film that turned out to be something entirely different.

Jared appeared in Suicide Squad for just seven minutes, although, there is more footage of him in the extended Blu-ray cut and even more in a vault somewhere. However, it doesn’t like this footage will see the light of day anytime soon.

To make matters worse for Leto, Joaquin Phoenix then went on to deliver one of the best performances of his career as the Joker in Todd Philips movie, Joker. He even secured an Academy Award for his portrayal of the villain.

Furthermore, if the media reports are true, Jared purportedly tried to stop Warner Brothers from releasing Todd Philips’s movie because he wanted his own stand-alone film using the Joker character.

It looks like this will never come to fruition, but regardless, Jared scored a role in another upcoming Marvel movie which is slated for release next year.
