If you were looking for Demi Lovato’s official Twitter account on Monday, you’ll be sadly disappointed. The “Sorry Not Sorry” singer deactivated her Twitter on Super Bowl Sunday after making public comments that offended 21 Savage fans. 21 Savage has been arrested and is currently being detained by ICE officials on accusations he overstayed his VISA and is really not from Atlanta but is, in fact, a UK national. The case is still early, in the development stages and under investigation. 21 Savage hasn’t released an official statement so we haven’t received the full picture yet.
That wasn’t enough to curtail that fiery backlash against Demi Lovato though.
Demi Lovato tweeted the following comment that launched the controversy.
“So far 21 Savage memes have been my favorite part of the Super Bowl.”
Once the news spread that 21 Savage wasn’t American but British, memes flooded Twitter. Some of the memes joked that 21 Savage had given the public plenty of clues that he wasn’t born in America. Others remarked on traits 21 Savage exhibited that should have let people know he wasn’t from Atlanta.
While many people initially said they felt betrayed about the allegations, there were some who looked at President Donald Trump’s immigration policies as the culprit. Early reports are attributing a move to deport 21 Savage to a prior issue with drugs.
According to sentiments expressed online, many of 21 Savage’s fans aren’t fazed by reports he wasn’t truthful about his birthplace and want to see him remain in the United States.
As Demi Lovato’s Twitter account is now defunct, you can see more of how the comments ignited backlash in the report by MTV Africa below.

The backlash against Demi Lovato quickly turned mean and personal. Lovato has suffered from several issues in her past. These culminated in one terrifying event when on July 24, 2018, Demi Lovato overdosed on opioids sending the public and her fans into a panic. Millions of people prayed for Demi, rallied to her support, shared anti-drug messages online and talked about the struggle to overcome addiction.
Those comments quickly vanished when trolls vehemently attacked Demi and some even encouraged her to overdose again.
Demi Lovato is still on Instagram and discussed what happened to her followers.
Though some accused Demi of not being supportive to a fellow artist who also had drug issues, Lovato maintained her position that she was simply joking about memes poking fun of 21 Savage’s apparent British nationality.
What do you think about what happened to Demi Lovato? Do you agree or disagree that her tweet was about nationality and not about 21 Savage the person
