Dixie Chicks Renames Their Band To 'The Chicks' Following BLM Protests

ABC News reported today that the Grammy Award winners, The Dixie Chicks, dropped the “Dixie,” from their name, not long after Lady Antebellum did the exact same thing. On Thursday, it was revealed that both their website and social media accounts were changed following the Black Lives Matter protests.

Moreover, the band addressed the fact that another group in New Zealand already uses the name. The Dixie Chicks wrote in their statement that they were grateful for the fact the New Zealand group allowed them to share their name.

As it was noted above, the move comes not long after Lady Antebellum changed their name to Lady A due to the word’s vague and indirect association to slavery.

Not long after the news came out, Lady A received backlash online after a black woman said she had been using the name for many years. The social media reaction to the sudden changes in the name has been incredibly mixed, although, in the entertainment industry, celebrities have hailed their decision.

For instance, one commenter wrote, “for how long will we have to constantly apologize for the history of the nation and bow down to these social media bullies and ill-informed and hysterical protestors?”

Another user, on the other hand, said, “I think this is a great decision for not only the group, but it shows how dedicated they are to social justice and doing what’s best for the people of color living in the United States.”

Obviously, the sudden changes came not long after the Black Lives Matter protests that spread around the country and into other Western nations.

The movement started after video footage of the killing of George Floyd in Minneapolis went viral. Since then, much of the entertainment industry, including many major corporations, have voiced their support for the Black Lives Matter protests.

For instance, Apple Computers, in Montreal, covered the front of their store on Sainte Catherine Street with a mural in honor of the protests.
