Dolly Parton is letting fans in on the moment she agreed to be Miley Cyrus’ godmother. At the time, the country crooner had no idea the baby girl would become such a talented, famous singer.

The legendary singer is not a mother, but she has several nieces, nephews, and godchildren that she loves as if they were her own babies. In a recent interview with SiriusXM’s Just Jenny, Parton was asked how she became Miley’s godmother.

“I worked with Billy Ray for all those years, when he had ‘Achy Breaky Heart. He worked with me on some shows we did in the early days. He opened some of my shows. We just got to know each other. I wrote a song called ‘Romeo,’ and had him in a video. We just kind of gelled, ’cause we’re both country kids. We had a lot of fun just talking about that. And then when Miley came along, I said, ‘She’s got to be my fairy goddaughter,” Parton recalled.

Billy Ray has also previously spoken out regarding his close relationship with Parton. There is no question these two country stars have nothing but love for each other. Miley joined a slew of other female singers in paying tribute to Parton at this year’s Grammy Awards.

Over the years, Miley has often sung her own rendition of her godmother’s hit song, Jolene too.

Art imitated life when Parton played Miley’s godmother in the hit TV show, Hannah Montana. The 9 to 5 star credited the Disney show for growing her fanbase, which now spans generations.

“It’s been so amazing that I’ve had all these little kids that grew up with that, and now have their little kids. All through the generations, they keep bringing me back around, and I love it,” gushed the 73-year-old.

Parton has plenty of advice to give her famous goddaughter. It is one of the ways the two singers maintain their close relationship.

“I’ve told her some things that I think are valuable and that she uses, but I’d rather live an example. I’d rather] be an example rather than just try to tell somebody to do this, do that because I don’t think that’s right. Everybody’s different. You’ve got your own journey. And some people are going to help you along the way, and they can kick a few rocks out of the road for you, but you got to walk it,” she expressed.
