According to report from Variety, Paramount Pictures hired Craig Brewer, known for Hustle and Flow, to direct the sequel to Eddie Murphy’s 1988 classic film, Coming To America, in which Eddie is expected to return in the starring role.

Reportedly, the project has been in the works for more than a couple of years with Jonathan Levine previously slated to sit in the director’s chair. The California Film Commission awarded the studio a $13 million tax credit in April of 2017 for the movie but that was based on the production beginning within at least 180 days.

Kenya Barris is supposed to rewrite the script for Coming To America, which was originally penned by David Sheffield and Barry Blaustein. Murphy is producing alongside Kevin Misher. The original, directed by John Landis, featured Murphy as a friendly African prince who moved to NYC to escape his family at home.

The movie was a massive hit, starring John Amos, Shari Headley, James Earl Jones, and Arsenio Hall. It grossed approximately $300 million at the worldwide box office, making it an incredibly successful movie for that time and era, especially for a comedy.

Considering comedy movies tend to cost less than $25 million to create, a $300 million return is a massive success. Home Alone, starring Macaulay Culkin, was another movie that cost approximately $18 million and earned over $450 million at the box office.

Eddie’s career has certainly seen a number of ups-and-downs over the last two decades, with his stand-up performances being considered as some of the greatest of all time, and a few of his movies as well.

However, many of his newest films were not quite as popular with some fans, considering their more family-friendly vibe. Although, his 2006 performance in Dreamgirls was widely hailed by critics, in addition to all three appearances in Shrek, alongside Mike Myers.

The last time Eddie Murphy was in the news was when it was revealed that he just had his 10th child with his fiancée, Paige Butcher. Paige, born in 1979, hails from Perth, Australia, and has two children with Eddie currently.
