Ellen Page is an actress, a producer, and an activist. She’s also a lesbian. If that makes you uncomfortable in President Donald Trump’s America, you can only imagine how she feels. In a recent interview with Stephen Colbert on the CBS show Late Night with Stephen Colbert, Page was candid and told America how it feels, she also told Americans to wake up and ‘connect the dots.’

After an attack on Empire actor Jussie Smollett was up for debate while political pundits called it a gay-hate crime and others a political ploy became headline news, there’s no question of what side Ellen Page is on. She sent her love and support to Jussie and advised Americans once again to wake up and realize there is no debate. Jussie Smollett is a victim of hate — a hatred that she says President Donald Trump and Vice President Mike Pence have espoused from their platform.

All celebrities are automatically given a platform. They speak and millions of people listen. Some are more deserving of their platform than others.

Ellen Page has used her platform in an undeniably powerful way as the video has garnered more than one million views and people are talking.

People are listening.

But will people change?

Many people who espouse anti-gay rhetoric are quick to state they aren’t hateful. Sometimes they justify their speech by saying they are following God’s law and God is love, therefore their attitude towards homosexuality isn’t the equivalent of hate.

This may be the crux of the controversy going on in America as people fight on the thin line between freedom of speech and hate crimes.

Jussie Smollett performed live with a clearly swollen face yet there are people denying he was attacked.

And if he was attacked by men saying the words “MAGA Country,” they don’t believe he was a victim of a hate crime.

Ellen Page is a lesbian.

Jussie Smollett is gay.
