Eminem’s music is making headlines for legal reasons as the legendary rapper’s publisher has reportedly decided to take music giant Spotify to court over licensing issues.
Eminem’s Eight Mile Style has officially accused Spotify of copyright infringement, and the company has now responded to the accusations, claiming that the publisher has no ground to stand on, and promised to prove their point not too long into the future.
According to the original filing, Spotify was not authorized to release any of Eminem’s latest music, because they had never signed a licensing deal for those tracks.
And yet, Spotify users have already streamed the “Rap God” artist’s tracks billions of times; the accusations went on to say according to The Blast.
The rapper has reportedly not been paid anything for those plays, and Spotify has instead sent “random payments of some sort,” which according to Eminem’s publisher, only accounts for a tiny part of what the company is owed.
And it does not appear to be a small figure in any case — the lawsuit is asking for around $36 million, according to reports.
Eminem’s attorneys claimed in court documents: “Spotify has not accounted to Eight Mile or paid Eight Mile for these streams but instead remitted random payments of some sort, which only purport to account for a fraction of those streams.”
An exact breakdown of the charges is not known yet, but it will likely be made public in the course of the case.

It is also interesting to think about Spotify’s possible ace up their sleeve, which they implied to have in their official response to the lawsuit filed by Eminem’s publisher.
Whether the company has anything or if they are trying to buy some time remains to be seen.
