Frances Bean Cobain was not even 2-years-old when her father Kurt Cobain died leaving her his vast fortune. The little girl would never have to worry about money for the rest of her life if she was smart.

However, having that kind of financial security under such traumatic circumstances not only caused her a life long struggle with money but years of guilt. The 26-year-old recently shared on the RuPaul: What’s the Tee? podcast how she honestly felt about being a trust fund baby.

“My relationship to money is different because I didn’t earn it. And so, it’s almost like this big, giant loan that I’ll never get rid of. I have an almost foreign relationship to it or guilt because it feels like money from somebody that I’ve never met, let alone earned myself,” Cobain shared.

She also explained that she had a difficult time understanding what money management was and why it was important. It has only been the last couple of years that the musician has even started to take control over her own money. Cobain is now more involved with people in charge of her money, as well as being accountable for looking at every dime spent.

In 2016, Cobain chose to get sober and credits her sobriety with her ability to realize that despite her inheritance, money is not always permanent. Taking a step back from her life and wealth, caused her to view it differently. For her entire life, she has lived a lavish lifestyle, one that also taught her to live outside her means. The musician is no longer living in excess, despite reports she gets a whopping $95,000 from her father’s estate.

It has been almost 25-years since the Nirvana front died, but for his only child Frances Bean Cobain, a life without him is all she has known. Instead of having him around growing up, she had his money. Although the guilt of not earning money drove her to be self-destructive for years, including getting married and divorced, Cobain now views her good fortune in a different light.

The guilt and shame over her father’s fortune, as well as her bad behavior, are behind Cobain now. Today she is focused on forging her own way in the music business, as well as repairing her damaged relationship with mom Courtney Love.
