Gabrielle Union Talks To NBC Execs, Says She Shared Her 'Unfiltered Truth' During 5-Hour Meeting As Network Launches Investigation

Former America’s Got Talent judge Gabrielle Union told her social media followers on Wednesday that she had a “lengthy five-hour” meeting with NBC that she believes was productive after AGT producers opted not to renew her contract after just one season on the show. The peacock network has also announced that they have launched an investigation into the matter.

According to Entertainment Weekly, Union also met with Fremantle and Simon Cowell’s Syco Entertainment after she reportedly complained of a toxic work environment that included a racist joke and production notes that told Union her hairstyles were “too black.”

Union tweeted that her meeting was productive and she was able to express her “unfiltered truth” about her brief stint on AGT. The Bring It On star added that she led with transparency and her desire and hope for real change.

NBC echoed Union’s comments with a statement of their own, saying the initial conversation was “candid and productive.”

“While there will be a further investigation to get a deeper understanding of the facts, we are working with Gabrielle to come to a positive resolution,” said the network.

Multiple reports claim that Union’s complaints about her time on AGT now mostly center on Cowell, the show’s creator and executive producer, for leading the way with the toxic culture and smoking on set even though it is illegal in California.

Initial reports stated that Union had a problem with an anti-Korean joke that guest judge Jay Leno told during a taped segment for the show that was eventually edited out. Union apparently urged producers to report the racist joke to human resources at NBC, but that never happened.

Fremantle and Syco also released a statement after talking to Union, and they said they remain committed to ensuring a respectful workplace for all employees. And, they take any questions about workplace culture very seriously.

“We are working with Ms. Union through her representatives to hear more about her concerns, following which we will take whatever next steps may be appropriate,” read the statement.

NBC fired both Gabrielle Union and Julianne Hough after just one season, and they have not yet announced their replacements.

America’s Got Talent will return with a new season in the summer of 2020. And, the spin-off America’s Got Talent: The Champions premieres January 6th on NBC.
