Game Of Thrones Season 8 May See The Most Unexpected Return Of A Once-Dead Character Ever

In the Season 7 finale of Game of Thrones, fans witnessed Sansa Stark sentence Littlefinger to death, and then Arya Stark proceeded to slit his throat. But, according to a new fan theory, Littlefinger was one step ahead of Sansa the whole time.

In a 2017 fan video that is surfacing again just weeks ahead of the Season 8 GOT premiere, YouTube user Neo presents the following theory – Littlefinger realized that Sansa was turning on him, so he paid a faceless assassin to take his place at Winterfell. This means that it wasn’t Littlefinger who died in the Winterfell throne room, and he will unexpectedly return in Season 8.

This whole theory comes from a scene in the fifth episode of Season 7 when Arya watched Littlefinger give a woman a coin after she tells him “Your time’s up.” Neo argues that every time fans saw Littlefinger after that scene, it was actually that anonymous woman wearing his face.

Neo also makes the connection by alluding to Season 4, where Littlefinger revealed that his great grandfather was from Braavos, the same place that faceless assassins are trained. The conclusion is that the coin Littlefinger gave the woman was the same as the iron coins Arya traded to get to Braavos safely.

In addition to the fan video, there is also an interview that Aidan Gillen – the actor who plays Littlefinger – gave to the Los Angeles Times after Season 7 ended, where he said that his character wasn’t a crier. But, as fans remember, crying is exactly how Littlefinger reacted to his death sentence.

“I don’t think Baelish does crocodile tears. I don’t think Baelish likes to shed tears, certainly not in front of people,” Gillen said. “Throughout the seasons, I’ve tried to show something that we haven’t seen before in successive seasons … warmth or a bit more of a human side or coldness.”

Gillen added that the one thing we haven’t seen from his character is vulnerability or weakness. And, if they ever saw any emotion, it was involuntary, not sentimental.

So, is it possible that Littlefinger outsmarted Sansa and faked his death? Fans will just have to wait and see if Neo is right.

The 8th and final season of Game of Thrones premieres April 14th on HBO.
