After months of rumors that a Gossip Girl reboot was headed to the small screen, HBO Max has confirmed the show is in the works.
The announcement was made on Wednesday afternoon by HBO Max. Original show creators, Josh Schwartz, and Stephanie Savage are both reportedly on board for the new project.
“Eight years after the original website went dark, a new generation of New York private school teens are introduced to the social surveillance of Gossip Girl. The prestige series will address just how much social media and the landscape of New York itself has changed in the intervening years,” HBO Max said in a statement to Variety.

Fans will soon here the famous words “Hey Upper Eastsiders” but will any of their favorite stars be returning for the HBO Max reboot?
Even though it will center around a new cast, there is undoubtedly a way for Dan, Chuck, Nate, Blair, and Serena to be incorporated. The CW 90210 reboot did it by having the new characters related to or interacted with the original Fox Beverly Hills 90210.
HBO Max did not reveal if Blake Lively, Penn Badgley, Leighton Meester, Ed Westwick, and Chace Crawford would be making appearances. Since the show is in early development, there will likely be more details on the Gossip Girl reboot and the original cast later.
The original GG cast is busy with their careers and lives at the moment, so getting even one to return is going to be a tall order. Plus, not all of them were into the idea of a reboot.
Badgley recently admitted he had a bad attitude the entire time on GG. He shared he did not feel the need to revisit Dan. Meester revealed it was not the healthiest environment for her. She is grateful and appreciative of the drama launching her career, but she has no desire to play Blair again.

Westwick also echoed the sentiment of not wanting to step into the shoes of Chuck. However, that was before allegations of sexual misconduct and rape got him fired from several projects. He may have changed his mind.
Crawford recently shared he would be open to appearing on a Gossip Girl reboot and seeing what Nate has been up to over the years. Lively admitted she never says never, indicating she could be persuaded to become Serena once again.
Gossip Girl is a go at HBO Max. What do you think about The CW show being the latest in a long list of revivals and reboots?
