Grey's Anatomy Star Ellen Pompeo Gives Fans A First Look At Season 16

Production for Season 16 of Grey’s Anatomy is officially underway, and star Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey) just gave fans an inside look at her first day back on the set. The 49-year-old posted a pic of her on-screen love interest Giacomo Gianniotti (Andrew DeLuca) in her bed beside a bowl of ice cream, making it clear that Meredith and DeLuca’s relationship is still going strong despite the Season 15 cliffhanger.

As fans know, DeLuca took the fall for Meredith last season when the administration at Grey Sloan discovered her insurance fraud. DeLuca ended up in jail, but in the season finale Meredith took accountability and turned herself in so DeLuca could go free.

It appeared that Meredith would be facing a serious legal battle when the story picked up in Season 16, but if her first scene takes place in bed with DeLuca, it’s possible she will end up avoiding any serious jail time.

Of course, that doesn’t necessarily mean that she or DeLuca will keep their jobs. Insurance fraud is no joke, and Dr. Bailey (Chandra Wilson) fired all three Grey’s Anatomy OG’s – Meredith, Dr. Alex Karev (Justin Chambers), and Dr. Webber (James Pickens Jr.) – in the Season 15 finale because of it.

But, if Gianniotti’s Instagram post is any indication, it looks like DeLuca will be back in the hospital right away. He shared a selfie alongside Pompeo on his first day back, and in the pic, he was wearing hospital scrubs instead of a jail uniform.

Fans couldn’t get enough of the popular on-screen couple known as “merluca,” and they made that clear in the comments.

“Be still my merluca heart. i need this framed,” wrote one fan, with another adding, “YOU ARE KILLING THE ENTIRE FANDOM WITH THIS.”

A third fan commented, “holy guac he’s not in the red jail uniform and back in blue scrubs…omg omg i’m not ready.”

For the first time since the death of her husband, Dr. Derek Shepherd (Patrick Dempsey), Meredith has moved on to a serious relationship, and she said “I love you” to DeLuca in the Season 15 finale.

It looks like no matter what happens with the insurance fraud case, the couple is going to get through it together.

Season 16 of Grey’s Anatomy premieres Thursday, September 26th on ABC.
