Janet Jackson, Future, And 50 Cent Will Take The Stage At Jeddah World Fest Following Human Rights Controversy

According to a report from Page Six, Future, 50 Cent, and Janet Jackson have joined the list of entertainers who will take center stage at Jeddah World Fest this week. It’s the concert in Saudi Arabia that Nicki Minaj canceled due to pressure from political activists and social media users.

Starting on Thursday at the King Abdullah Sports Stadium, the website promoting the event shared photos of Jackson, Future, and 50 Cent, along with other stars such as Steve Aoki and Liam Payne. The Human Rights Foundation among others has asked for performers not to go there on account of the gender segregation policies.

Reportedly, the nation prohibits the co-mingling of single men and women in public places, including in schools, universities, coffee shops, and restaurants. Representatives on behalf of the three aforementioned performers haven’t acted on the publication’s request for a remark.

This past Thursday, Thor Halvorssen, the president of the Human Rights Foundation, accused the entertainers of choosing “money over morals” in a statement to The Associated Press.

Thor went on to accuse the performers of being viciously hypocritical, stating that many of them make grandiose public statements in support of women and LGBT rights, however, they perform in a country that endorses such behavior.

As it was mentioned in passing above, Nicki Minaj recently released a statement in which she refused to perform at the Jeddah World Fest due to human rights violations and the treatment of women and LGBT communities.

On the other hand, however, Saudi Arabia recently allowed women to start driving cars, which was formerly the only ban in the world on women’s ability to operate a motor vehicle. Furthermore, the Crown Prince Mohammed Bin Salman also agreed to open the very first movie theater in the nation.

The president of the Human Rights Foundation also called to attention the fact that a columnist from The Washington Post was allegedly murdered there. In the last few months, other stars to visit the country include Tiesto, David Guetta, Sean Paul, Black Eyed Peas, Enrique Iglesias, and Mariah Carey.
