Jay Z could not miss the opportunity to gush over his wife and other very ‘strong women’ in his life when he received the NAACP President’s Award. The rapper’s speech was very touching and certainly made those women very happy.
NAACP President Derrick Johnson was the one to hand Jay Z the award and praised him in the presentation, among other things, saying the rapper had ‘changed the very fabric of the culture of America.’
He went on to argue that the honor they were giving Jay could not have come at a better time in the country’s history.
While it was definitely a big deal to receive such recognition, Jay chose to start his acceptance with a joke.
He stated that he wished to cite a ‘kind-hearted president’ before pausing a bit, making the audience laugh.
Jay then added: ‘I was talking about Donald Glover.’
He went ahead to actually quote Abraham Lincoln: ‘It’s not the amount of years in your life, it’s the amount of life in your years that count in the end.’ [The quote] embodied my beautiful grandmother who I would like to dedicate this award to, Hattie White.’
‘She is so full of life and she among other accomplishments, being super great and very tough, she raised seven kids, one little walk up in Brooklyn. 615 Lexington, started my life. On top of that, her kids had kids and we all were raised in the same house. One household,’ the superstar stated.
He then made it very clear that because of ‘those strong women in my house,’ he grew up believing he could achieve anything he wanted to.
As a result, he could not help but dedicate the award ‘to those beautiful women.’
But of course, he did not forget about yet another beautiful, strong woman in his life – wife Beyonce – although he joked that she was on the list too only because he liked the white pantsuit she was wearing.
