According to a report from Page Six, Jerry Seinfeld recently posted an advertisement for his Netflix series, Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee on his Instagram, and in the advertisement, he lambasted other TV shows who have taken inspiration from his wildly successful series.
Seinfeld said that many other shows out there right now are clearly a direct rip-off of his Comedians in Cars. Seinfeld says in the post that he and his team are proud other people have taken a liking to their style, however, they should do a much better job if they’re going to do it at all.
“If you’re going to knock us off, get it right!” the legendary comedian urged his followers. However, reportedly, after some backlash, Jerry came out to apologize to a British actor who hosted a host-in-cars series before Seinfeld’s series came to prominence.
This past Wednesday, Robert Llewellyn tweeted that his show, Carpool, actually came before Comedians in Cars. Robert’s show started on the internet back in 2009 and began airing on television in 2010 and in 2011. The concept of the two productions is similar, with Llweyn chatting with celebs while they drive around in a Toyota.
Jerry wrote on his account that he was sorry to Robert for his series, Carpool because he hadn’t ever “heard of it.” In response, Robert wrote that he appreciated the apology and he has since moved on from the aforementioned production.
In recent news, Netflix acquired the rights to stream Jerry Seinfeld’s show on its platform for hundreds of millions of dollars, making Jerry, easily, one of the richest comedians of all time.
Written and created by Larry David and Jerry, Seinfeld has gone down in history as one of the great television shows ever and has long been on the air, for which Jerry receives residual checks. In other words, Jerry doesn’t have to work anymore if he doesn’t want too, but he’ll likely do so anyway just for the love of art and comedy.
