Jessica Simpson Opens Up About Sexual Abuse & Alcohol And Pill Addiction In New Memoir

Jessica Simpson is releasing a new memoir titled Open Book, and in it, the 39-year-old reveals that she was sexually abused as a child. Simpson also shares that after experiencing the trauma, she turned to alcohol and pills to self-medicate.

People magazine got their hands on an excerpt from the book ahead of its February release date, and in those pages, Simpson writes about how she was sexually abused starting at the age of six.

Simpson says that she was sharing a bed with the daughter of a family friend, and the abuse began with tickling on her back before it escalated into things that were “extremely uncomfortable.”

“I wanted to tell my parents,” she writes. “I was the victim but somehow I felt in the wrong.”

The I Think I’m In Love With You singer says that she told her parents – Joe and Tina Simpson – about the abuse when she was 12 years old. She also remembers how her mom slapped her dad’s arm and said, “I told you something was happening.” However, Jessica says that Joe “kept his eye on the road and said nothing.”

“We never stayed at my parents’ friends house again but we also didn’t talk about what I had said,” recalls Simpson.

Simpson’s career eventually took off with successful albums and songs at the top of the charts. She also starred in the groundbreaking reality show Newlyweds: Nick & Jessica with her first husband, Nick Lachey.

Simpson says that to cope with her childhood trauma as an adult, she “was killing myself with all the drinking and pills.”

The mom-of-three finally got sober in November 2017, and she claims that it was “easy” to quit drinking. Simpson explained that when she finally said she needed help, she felt like a little girl that found her calling in life again.

Jessica Simpson – who shares Maxwell, 7, Ace, 6, and Birdie, 10 months, with husband Eric Johnson – also gives credit to her family and friends for being such an amazing support system. And, when she told them she needed help, they gave her a big group hug.

Open Book will be available wherever books are sold on February 4th.
