When Karlie Kloss hung up her Victoria’s Secret Angel wings in early 2015, many people believed it was her then-boyfriend Josh Kushner and his conservative family who were behind the decision. But, in a new interview, Kloss reveals that the real reason she decided to part ways with the famous lingerie retailer was that she was studying feminist theory at New York University’s Gallatin School, and she realized the image she had as a Victoria’s Secret model wasn’t truly reflective of who she is.

Kloss told British Vogue that being a Victoria’s Secret Angel wasn’t a message she wanted to send to young women around the world about what it means to be beautiful.

“I think that was a pivotal moment in me stepping into my power as a feminist, being able to make my own choices and my own narrative, whether through the companies I choose to work with, or through the image I put out to the world,” said Kloss.

The 26-year-old Project Runway host had been an Angel for three years when she decided not to renew her contract. However, after a two-year break, she returned one last time to walk the runway for the company in the 2017 Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show in Shanghai.

The Angel image may not be the message she wanted to send to her young female fans about the meaning of beauty, but Kloss has defended Victoria’s Secret in the #MeToo era, saying that the company is relevant in the world we live in today. Kloss says that there is something powerful about a woman who is in charge and owns her sexuality.

Karlie Kloss is now married to Josh Kushner – the brother of Jared Kushner, Donald Trump’s son-in-law – and she says that being a “fervent Democrat” who has married into a largely Republican family who is now part of the White House has been “hard.”

However, she and her husband are both Democrats, and she has decided to focus on the values that they share, which are the same liberal values that have guided her throughout her life.
