During the most recent episode of American Idol, judges Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie were in the middle of filming auditions at the Sunriver Resort in Sunriver, Oregon, when they started to smell gas. It turns out that there was a gas leak on the property, and it caused Perry to collapse.
The Dark Horse singer was the first to notice something was wrong. She asked Bryan and Richie if they smelled gas, and then she said that it was “pretty intense.” Bryan immediately told American Idol producers that they were “getting heavy propane,” and Perry added that she had a “slight headache” because of the smell.

When she stood up to leave the room, Perry said, “Oh it’s bad, it’s really bad.”
Perry, Bryan, and Richie – plus all of the crew and contestants – started evacuating the area as firefighters showed up to handle the situation. When the judges were together outside, Bryan told cameras that it wasn’t a joke, and there really was a gas leak.
At that moment, Perry said that she wasn’t feeling good, and that’s when she fainted. Everything eventually turned out okay and Perry was fine after the first responders found the problem in the resort’s kitchen.
“You saved me!” Perry told the firefighters after the problem was solved. She also posted the video clip on Twitter, and wrote in the caption, “Big shout out to all our first responders around the county,” Perry wrote, alongside the video. “Thanks for risking your lives every day…and 🎶 all night long 🎶 #AmericanIdol 🙏🏻.”

The judges invited three of the first responders inside so they could audition for American Idol by singing Richie’s big 1980s hit All Night Long. All three ended up receiving golden tickets for the next round of auditions in Hollywood.
This is the third season that Katy Perry, Luke Bryan, and Lionel Richie have been judges on American Idol since the show moved to ABC in 2018 after 15 seasons on Fox. And, they say that the talent this year is better than ever.
“The talent is showing up in buckets,” said Richie. “They’re bringing more attitude to the table. In certain cases we have to turn the attitude down. But for the most part it’s amazing what’s happened this year.”
New episodes of American Idol air Sunday nights on ABC.
