Keanu Reeves Joins Plethora Of Celebrities In Condemnation Of Violence Against Italian Cinema Screening

According to a report from Variety, Keanu Reeves just came out in support of the cinema collective, Cinema America, after it was attacked by a political group. Reeve joined the list of a number of different filmmakers, actors, and actresses, who condemned the attack on Cinema America.

On Thursday, the group released its statement on Facebook after four people were attacked while watching First Reformed, by Paul Schrader. The Guardian reported the Italian letter which read that it was unacceptable for people to think violence was an appropriate way of imposing one’s will.

“We can’t accept a wound of this kind,” the report stated, adding that it was inflicted to not only the world of film but to the entire globe, in general. Among the stars who signed the document include John Malkovich, Richard Gere, Debra Winger, Jeremy Irons, William Dafoe, Stephen Frears, Guillermo Del Toro, Spike Lee, Alfonso Cuaron, and Francis Ford Coppola.

Reportedly, the attack was orchestrated on the 16th of June by the group, Blocco Studentesco, which supposedly is associated with the CasaPound political party. Variety labeled it as a “far-right organization.” Cinema America is an organization, created seven years ago, which is known for organizing movie viewings in Rome, Italy.

According to the CasaPound’s Wikipedia page, it was born as a consequence of the occupation of government-owned buildings by squatter groups in the neighborhood of Esquilino in Rome on the 26th of December, 2003.

This wouldn’t be the first time attackers have focused their sight on movie viewers. On the 20th of July, 2012, James Holmes went into an Aurora, Colorado, movie theater and opened fire on the attendees, killing approximately 12 and injuring another 132.

James Holmes pled not guilty by insanity, however, he was sentenced to numerous life sentences as well as 3,318 years without parole. Interestingly, James had no prior criminal convictions and had a Bachelor’s Degree in Neuroscience. This event served as one of the primary factors in the resurgence of interest in American gun control laws.
