Yesterday, Jussie Smollett was targeted in a racist and homophobic attack. A slew of celebrities came out in support of the ‘Empire’ actor, including Kevin Hart.
Hart uploaded an Instagram post of Jussie Smollett’s photo that read: “Sending prayers your way @jussiesmollett ….This is unbelievably sad. Why are we going backwards….this is disgusting. We as people have to do better. WTF is going on the world???? Why are we falling in love with hate???? God damn it people….Choose love…I repeat…Choose love. I will forever choose love and I will continue to teach my kids how to do the same. Stand strong brother.”
Although the comedian may have thought he was just renouncing hate like his colleagues, he was in for a not-so-shocking surprise when social media rejected his two cents.
Almost instantly Instagram users slammed Kevin for his recent Oscars scandal where he stepped down from the host position due to past homophobic tweets that resurfaced.
One user wrote: “This was done by people who also don’t want their son to play with a doll house because they think ‘that’s gay.’ In the same vein as you infamous tweets”
While another explained: “This is why people were so enraged by your jokes and comments. Joking about abusing Queer POC is not okay. It adds to a culture that allows this kind of horrific crime to take place.”
The public shaming went on for hundreds of comments that caused Kevin to indirectly respond.
The ‘Night School’ actor tweeted: “Operation spread love is in full effect damn it. I don’t condone or believe in hate, in fact I despise it. Hate makes me sick to my stomach…Its pointless. Cowards & weak individuals embrace it. I choose love…I love all of you. I challenge the rest of the world 2 do the same.”
What do you think about people’s reaction to Kevin’s comments? Did he deserve the backlash?
