Frozen star Kristen Bell is sharing the details of how her husband, Dax Shepard, broke his hand. During an interview earlier this week, Bell said that Shepard was “very embarrassed” about how he injured himself because he broke a “cardinal rule” during an off-roading trip.
During an appearance on The Ellen Degeneres Show, Bell explained that Shepard went on an “essential off-roading trip” earlier this year before the COVID-19 lockdown.
“It was by himself but he was off-roading in the mountains and he had a buddy with him, but they were in separate off-road vehicles, and he got to an edge of a cliff,” explained Bell. “He was sitting on the edge of a cliff and he put his hand up just to look out and the weight of his arm tipped his Polaris RZR — is what he was on — over.”
Bell noted that when you are riding an ATV with a roll cage, you don’t get injured when you are inside them. However, because Shepard made the mistake of putting his hand outside of the cage, it “did crush all the bones in his hand.”
The mom-of-two added that Shepard was “very embarrassed” because the only chance of injury is putting your hands outside of the roll cage or outside of the car, and he did just that.
Bell also noted that Shepard “is his own doctor” after he decided to pull one of the seven surgical pins in his cast on his own because it was starting to “eject out.” She joked that not only does Shepard have a degree in anthropology, but he also holds degrees in dentistry and surgery.
Bell says that Shepard called his doctor and asked if he could pull the pin out, and the doctor gave Shepard his blessing.

The Veronica Mars alum also revealed that Shepard didn’t tell her about his broken hand right away. She says that he didn’t call her, and instead he burst through the door after driving home and the first thing he said to her was: “I just don’t want to be in trouble.”
Kristen Bell called that “crazy” because Shepard never gets in trouble with her.
“Like, I’ll let you know if I’m disappointed in your actions, but I’m an adult, he’s an adult, I can’t get him in trouble,” said Bell. “I said, ‘You’re not in trouble but it’s not the smartest move we could have made.’”
