The 21-year-old model shared her struggle in a lengthy essay via her Instagram Stories Friday afternoon. She is disclosing personal details of her mental health journey, including several stints in rehab for “terrible depression.”

Like many young people, her first year of college led Hamlin to suffer from depression. She was living across the country from her close-knit family. Hamlin was in New York City, while Lisa, her dad Harry Hamlin and sister Amelia were back home in Los Angeles.

The depression caused her to embark on an unhealthy relationship and surround herself with people that were negatively impacting her life.

“I started attracting negative people into my life because my thoughts were so negative. I got trapped in a severely unhealthy relationship that pushed me over the edge. I couldn’t get out of the relationship because I thought I was deserving of it,” she shared.

After eight months in the bad relationship, Hamlin chose to move home where she had the support of her family. Two weeks later, she entered rehab for depression.

“I was admitted into a rehab facility. I knew the way I was living was unhealthy and detrimental to my mental health, so I called my mom and told her I needed help. Little did I know that this was going to be the BEST thing that has ever happened to me. I learned so much about being independent, feeling less shameful and guilty, I learned about self-love instead of self-deprivation and so much more,” she shared.

Although she felt better after her first stay in rehab. In June of 2018, Hamlin felt herself slipping back into a depression, so she chose to seek help again. Her second stint in rehab lasted for two months.

Delilah Hamlin is sharing her battle with depression to reveal an invaluable lesson to her followers.

“Do things that make you happy and make you feel good about yourself. Don’t let another individual take over your life and tell you who you are or how to be. Take control of your own life and get rid of all negative people and energy that may surround you. And I guarantee this will lead to a happier life even if it’s hard in the moment,” she expressed.
