Lizzo Files Lawsuit Against Songwriters Who Claim They Deserve Credit For Truth Hurts While Giving Credit To British Singer For Iconic Lyric

Just one week after a sibling songwriting team accused Lizzo and her writing team of using lyrics, chords, and melodies from a songwriting session without giving them any credit, the singer has fired back with a lawsuit. A new report claims that Lizzo and her team have filed a lawsuit against Justin and Jeremiah Raisen to establish that they have no right to profit from one of the biggest songs of the summer.

Justin and Jeremiah claim that they worked with Lizzo and her team on a song called Healthy in April 2017, and they say that they even introduced her to the iconic lyric “I just took a DNA test turns out I’m 100 percent that b*tch” after seeing British singer Mina Lioness post it on Twitter.

The siblings say that Lizzo and her team took their work and put it into Truth Hurts without crediting them, but Lizzo says the song belongs to her.

“Today we filed a lawsuit on Lizzo’s behalf to establish, in a court of law, that the Raisens are not writers of Truth Hurts and have no right to profit from the song’s success,” Lizzo’s lawyer Cynthia Arato said in a statement to Page Six.

The statement goes on to say that the Raisens didn’t collaborate with Lizzo or anyone else to create the song, and they didn’t help write any of the material so they don’t deserve any money for it.

Lizzo’s team says that both Justin and Jeremiah “expressly renounced any claim” to the work in writing a few months ago, and they have made that clear in the lawsuit. Her team also pointed out that it isn’t out of the ordinary for people to try to take advantage of successful artists, but it is disappointing that Lizzo has to deal with the Raisen brothers’ false claims and harassment.

The Good As Hell singer also announced today that she has officially credited Lioness for her contribution to Truth Hurts after she made accusations of plagiarism over the memorable lyric.

In addition to the claims from the Raisens, 90s R&B singer CeCe Peniston has also accused Lizzo – aka Melissa Jefferson – of using her vocal ad-libs from her 1992 hit Finally in her track Juice. However, Lizzo’s label Warner/Chappell says there is “no substantial similarity” between the two songs, and therefore it’s not a valid claim.
