The Saved By The Bell reboot is in full swing at NBC’s new streaming platform Peacock, and the classic teen sitcom from the late 1980s and early 1990s has officially secured its lead character. Mark-Paul Gosselaar – who played the iconic role of Zack Morris in the original Good Morning Miss Bliss, which eventually turned into Saved By the Bell – has signed on as a producer for the new project and will appear in at least three episodes.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the reboot has already secured Elizabeth Berkley (Jessie Spano) and Mario Lopez (A.C. Slater). And now, the new platform is working on bringing back Tiffani-Amber Thiessen (Kelly Kapowski).

The 2020 version of Saved By The Bell will reportedly be a single-camera ten-episode comedy that will put a twist on the show’s original premise to make the show more current and allow them to tackle real-life issues. This time around, Zack Morris is the governor of California. And, to tie-in Bayside High School to the storyline, Governor Morris is leading a new educational program that transfers low-income students to better performing schools like his alma mater in the Pacific Palisades, after he finds himself under fire for closing too many low-income schools.

“The influx of new students gives the over-privileged Bayside kids a much needed and hilarious dose of reality,” reads the reboot’s logline.

Lark Voorhees (Lisa Turtle), Dustin Diamond (Screech Powers), and Dennis Haskins (Mr. Belding) have not signed onto the project yet, and it isn’t clear if any or all of them are in talks to reprise their roles.

Berkley shared her excitement about the reboot with her Instagram followers in December when she posted a pic from the first table read. In the snap, the Showgirls star held her script, and in the caption she quoted one of Jessie Spano’s most iconic lines from the show.

“I’m so excited…. to be back at Bayside!!!!✨❤️ Today was the table read for our new SBTB !!!! Can’t wait for you all to see 10 new episodes on #nbc #universal #peacock soon!!!” wrote Berkley.

In addition to the new Saved By the Bell, Gosselaar is also starring in the new Black-ish spin-off Mixed-ish. After leaving the role of Zack Morris behind, Gosselaar starred in the 1990s ABC cop drama NYPD Blue and the TNT legal dramedy Franklin & Bash.
