According to a report from Page Six, Matthew McConaughey has finally grabbed his high school diploma more than 30 years after he finished his final course in school. When the Texas star returned to his graduating class on Friday night, the longtime Hollywood star picked up his diploma.

A spokeswoman for the Longview High School said to reporters from Longview News-Journal that, typically, graduates grab their diploma while at commencement ceremonies, however, Matthew never actually came to get his.

The 49-year-old star returned to Longview High School for the first time since 1988, and responded with one word in celebration: “proof.” Now, Mr. McConaughey lives in Austin, Texas. Matthew told those in attendance that he achieved success because he followed his heart, and he told them to do the same.

As fans of the actor know, he earned an Oscar for his performance in the drama film depicting the story of an AIDS victim in Dallas Buyers Club. The movie explored the politics and social dynamics behind pharmaceutical companies who didn’t want to release a drug that would potentially save lives.

These days, Matthew’s career, while he has earned significant success, hasn’t been doing as great as it once was. The actor has secured a few box office failures, with his latest being Beach Bum. Although, The Dark Tower was commercially successful.

The critics have been less forgiving, with his latest Beach Bum film merely accruing a $1.8 million opening, the lowest of his career, as well as a 55% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. Sonia Roa, from The Washington Post, pointed out the actor’s string of bad flicks, including Serenity alongside Anne Hathaway.

Some insiders say Beach Bum was an attempt to bring the actor back to his roots of the “chilled-out” style character, reminiscent of the role that brought him fame in the 1990s in Dazed and Confused. In the 1993 movie, Matthew played David Wooderson, the smooth-talking man who talks up young girls.
