Meghan Markle Has 'Americanized' Prince Harry Says Ladies of London Alum Julie Montagu

Former Ladies of London star Julie Montagu, Viscountess Hinchingbrooke, knows what it’s like to be an American inside the British aristocracy. The Indiana native – who is married to the son of the Earl of Sandwich – has a unique take when it comes to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s decision to step down as senior royals, and she is completely supportive of the couple as they attempt to start a new life in America with their one-year-old son, Archie Harrison.

Montagu is the host of the new Smithsonian Channel series An American Aristocrat’s Guide to Great Estates, and she recently told People magazine that Markle has “slightly Americanized” Prince Harry since Megxit, and she loves it. However, she wasn’t expecting the couple to move to the United States so quickly.

“I actually thought they were going to stay in Canada, just because I thought it would be more peaceful for them,” explained Montagu. “I thought it was a good transition country — a good compromise.”

Montagu – who is married to Luke Timothy Charles Montagu, Viscount Hinchingbrooke, son of the 11th Earl of Sandwich – says that living anywhere offers more privacy than being a member of the British royal family – even living in Los Angeles near Hollywood and the paparazzi.

She understands why Markle wants to be close to her mom, Doria Ragland, in Los Angeles. And, she also believes the couple is doing their best to avoid the spotlight, despite making recent headlines for their new Archewell foundation and moving to America in the middle of a pandemic.

Montagu believes Harry and Meghan are doing everything they can to “stay under the radar,” and she doesn’t think they want to be in the news.

“They want their projects and the charitable foundations that they support to be in the news, but they themselves don’t want to be in the news,” explained Montagu.

The mom-of-four isn’t convinced that Prince Harry is missing royal life, either. She says he might miss parts of it, but she thinks Harry has always wanted “an escape” from the royal family.

“Now that the dust has settled with their move and they’ve dropped their HRH titles — they’re now ready to be normal. I think that they will keep their [new] house very, very private as far as photos go,” says the former Bravo star.
