CBS just announced that it has approved NCIS for another season. Mark Harmon is expected to reprise his role as Leroy Jethro Gibbs in Season 17 of NCIS, but is there a chance he walks away from the series ahead of Season 18?
Fans were naturally thrilled to learn that their favorite crime procedural will be back for another run next year. Harmon thanked fans from the set shortly after the announcement, though he has yet to say anything about returning to the show if CBS renews it for Season 18.

Given how the series continues to boast strong ratings, there is no reason to believe that the network will pull the plug anytime soon.
Harmon has played the part of Gibbs for well over a decade and has not shown any signs of slowing down. According to Cinema Blend, the actor previously said that he still enjoys being a part of the show after so many years, which is definitely a promising sign. Unless the ratings really start to drop, there is a strong chance that Gibbs will stay on board until the very end.
That said, CBS has yet to announce renewals for the show’s two spinoffs: NCIS: New Orleans and NCIS: Los Angeles. Harmon is also busy working as an executive producer on a brand new series, which will certainly eat up a lot of his time. Only time will tell if Harmon can handle the extra work, but fans clearly hope he remains on the show for the foreseeable future.

After thanking viewers on social media, many fans expressed their excitement about Season 17. Harmon received plenty of love from his loyal followers, who clearly want to see Gibbs back in action.
Aside from the new season, CBS has not announced any future plans for the show. In the meantime, new episodes of NCIS air Tuesday nights on CBS.
