Season 3 of the Netflix royal drama The Crown – a dramatized behind-the-scenes look at the decades-long reign of Queen Elizabeth – is almost here. And, the streaming service has finally released a trailer that features Olivia Colman speaking as Queen Elizabeth for the very first time.
Colman is taking over the role from Emmy-winner Claire Foy, and both women appear in the 30-second trailer. The clip shows the monarch looking over an updated version of the British postage stamp that features her profile.
Standing in a room full of male advisors and two corgis, Colman wears a mauve-colored suit with pearl earrings and a pearl necklace as she scrutinizes an enlarged photo of the old postage stamp with Foy’s profile compared to a photo of the new stamp with her own profile.
“Everyone is delighted with the new profile, ma’am,” says one of her advisers. “Which they feel to be an elegant reflection of her majesty’s transition from young woman to…”
“Old bat,” interjects the Queen.
Her adviser replies, “Settled sovereign,” and then adds, “Just the tiniest changes.”
Elizabeth disagrees, saying she sees “a great many changes” and there is nothing anyone can do about it.
“One just has to get on with it,” says the Queen.
The new preview is the first time fans have had the chance to see the 45-year-old Oscar winner speak in her role as Queen Elizabeth. Last month, Netflix teased fans with Colman taking over the role with a short clip of her dressed as Queen Elizabeth standing in a doorway and looking at the camera without saying a word.
It’s been two years since Netflix released Season 2 of The Crown, so fans have been waiting anxiously to see the next chapter of the Queen’s story. The first two seasons starred Foy and Matt Smith as Queen Elizabeth and Prince Philip during the early days of their marriage and her time on the throne.
Season 3 will be all about the 1960s, and will feature Colman as the monarch and Tobias Menzies as Prince Philip. Also joining the cast is Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret, Josh O’Connor as a young Prince Charles, Erin Doherty as Princess Anne, Ben Daniels as Lord Snowdon, Jason Watkins as Prime Minister Harold Wilson, and Charles Dance as Lord Mountbatten.
The trailer for Season 3 of The Crown will air during the broadcast of the 71st Annual Emmy Awards on Sunday, September 22nd. And, the third season will launch globally on Netflix on November 17th.
