Early Monday morning, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences released their full list of nominees for the 2020 Oscars, and Joker starring Joaquin Phoenix led the way with 11 nominations. It was followed closely by The Irishman, 1917, and Once Upon A Time…In Hollywood, as all three of those films landed ten nods, but there were some notable snubs that have already caused some outrage on social media.
The biggest snub this year was Jennifer Lopez, who didn’t receive a nomination for her performance in Hustlers, which has been her most successful movie in years. Lopez was nominated for a Golden Globe and a Screen Actors Guild Award, but the Academy decided to leave her out this year.

More acting snubs included Adam Sandler and Eddie Murphy. Neither comedian received a nomination in the Best Actor category, despite both of them creating serious Oscar buzz for their roles in Uncut Gems and Dolemite Is My Name, respectively. Surprisingly, Jonathan Pryce (The Two Popes) and Antonio Banderas (Pain and Glory) did make the cut.
Even though she won a Golden Globe just a week ago, Awkwafina was left out of the Best Actress category for her performance in the indie comedy The Farewell. Many considered the movie – and her performance – to be among the best of the year. But both the actress and the movie failed to win over the Academy.
The South Korean film Parasite did score quite a few nominations, including Best Picture, Best Screenplay, and Best Director for Bong Joon Ho. But, none of the actors in the film received a nomination in the lead and supporting acting categories.

After losing to Missing Link at the Golden Globes for Best Animated Film, Frozen 2 was completely left out of the Oscar nominees for the same category. However, it did receive a Best Original Song nomination for Into The Unknown.
One of the biggest controversies sparked by the 2020 Oscar nominations happened in the Best Directing category. Once again, there were no female directors nominated despite Greta Gerwig receiving major praise for her take on the classic Little Women.
After reading the list of nominees to the media, presenter Issa Rae said, “Congratulations to those men.”
