Presidential Candidate Andrew Yang Slams SNL's Shane Gillis For His Use Of Asian Slurs In Podcast

According to a report from USAToday, Andrew Yang, the presidential candidate, came out to respond to Shane Gillis’ recently surfaced video clip in which he used ethnic slurs. Shane was just announced as a new member of the Saturday Night Live crew, however, his reputation has already come under question.

As it was previously reported, Shane came under fire for the comments he made on his podcast, Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast, regarding Asian-Americans and other groups. The SNL alum stated that Chinatown was “nuts,” saying to his host, “let the c*inks live there.”

Moreover, reports from Page Six as well as Vice claim that Gillis also used the term to describe the aforementioned presidential candidate. Gillis issued an apology on Thursday, stating that, “I’m a comedian who pushes boundaries, I sometimes miss.”

Later in the same statement, Shane stated that he was “happy to apologize” to any person who was truly offended by the comments he made. On Saturday, Yang shared his apology letter on his Twitter account along with the message that stated that he was happy to sit down with Shane and talk if he’d like.

In another tweet, Yang emphasized that he believes Shane shouldn’t lose his job on Saturday Night Live. Yang said in the same tweet that human beings are subject to mistakes, and it wouldn’t hurt for us to be more “forgiving rather than punitive.”

People who have been following this scandal know that Yang isn’t the only person to address Gillis’ comments. Many people have called upon NBC to fire Shane for his past remarks.

The news of the comedian’s troubles came on the same day that it was revealed he’d appear on Saturday Night Live with Bowen Yang and Chloe Fineman.

As most know, this wouldn’t be the first time that a comedian has found themselves in hot water with media journalists and entertainment industry figures. Dave Chappelle was criticized for his recent Netflix special, Sticks and Stones, which poked fun at the issues du jour, including the allegations against Michael Jackson from Wade Robson and James Safechuck.
