When Prince William and Prince Harry were growing up, Prince Charles and his ex-wife, the late Princess Diana, were always very protective of their sons, and they did their best to shield them from media so they could live their lives away from the cameras. This resulted in a “marvelous childhood” for the young royals, and the credit for this has always gone to their mom. But, historian Kate Williams says that this has led to Prince Charles feeling left out of the discussion.
There is no doubt that Princess Diana had a significant influence on William and Harry, and she will continue to do so the rest of their lives.
“Diana was always there for them, making life fun, taking them out on exciting places, spending time with them,” Williams told Quest Red. “I think there has been a degree of focus on Diana as a marvelous mother, and perhaps Charles has been left out.”
The public focuses on the Princess of Wales, but both William and Harry have talked about the support their father has given them as children and adults. According to Williams, the two princes have said that they owe Prince Charles a lot and he has taught them so much. The royals have made it clear that both of their parents made them who they are and influenced what they will give to their children.
According to The Express, during his 70th birthday celebration last year, Prince William and Prince Harry discussed the positive life lessons they have received from their dad. William said that the way the Prince of Wales advocates for his environmental beliefs has been passed on to both him and his brother, and he told a story about the time Prince Charles took them “litter picking” on holiday.
“We were in Norfolk on school holidays and went out litter picking with him. Both of us thought ‘This is perfectly normal, everyone must do it.’ We’re there with our, basically, spikes, stabbing the rubbish into black plastic bags,” said William.
Prince Charles is well-known for his commitment to the environment, and now he is worried about the world his grandchildren will live in. Over the years, he has launched multiple sustainability initiatives, raised awareness for issues like climate change and plastic pollution and he has also campaigned for the preservation of the world’s “natural assets.”
Prince Charles is set to become a grandpa for the fourth time when Prince Harry and Meghan Markle welcome their first child this spring.
