It’s the million dollar question everyone asked after seeing R. Kelly’s explosive interview with Gayle King: Why did he go on CBS This Morning in the first place? Social media erupted with conversations and controversies following the interview and many wondered if R. Kelly had a lawyer. As much of R. Kelly’s statements may be admissible in court, people voiced their opinions weighing in on what prompted R. Kelly to do the interview.
Now the public has the answer.
TMZ reported that a source close to them said R. Kelly was “touched in his spirit” to do the interview. Does this speak to the level of spirituality that R. Kelly walks in his daily life?
Describing the decision as bizarre, TMZ continued with the following.
“R. Kelly sat down with Gayle King because he is in constant touch with his “spirit” and tends to listen to it more than the people around him. He also said he felt he owed it to himself and his fans to break his silence and tell his side.”
Many people responded to the news by suggesting that next time R. Kelly might want to listen to his attorney instead of his spirit.
R. Kelly faces 10 counts of criminal sexual misconduct involving four victims, three of whom are underage. There are multiple investigations underway including both at the state and federal level, and it is possible more charges could be filed. If convicted on the 10 counts, R. Kelly could face 70 years in prison.
While R. Kelly has pled not guilty in court and denies ever abusing or engaging in sexual conduct with underage girls, there are multiple women who tell a different story.
Some of these women shared their allegations and accusations of physical, emotional, and sexual abuse against R. Kelly in the Lifetime docu-series Surviving R. Kelly.

Though R. Kelly says he was motivated by his spirit to do the interview, Stephanie “Sparkle” Edwards spoke to Entertainment Tonight and said she believed that R. Kelly was acting while speaking to Gayle King.
When asked to elaborate, Sparkle said that everything R. Kelly does is for show.
What do you think of R. Kelly’s reason for giving the interview? Do you think it was a wise choice?
