R. Kelly's Music Banned From Chicago Radio Station Following "Surviving R. Kelly" Docu-Series

A radio station in Chicago recently announced they would no longer host R. Kelly’s music on their platform. According to a report from the Chicago-Sun Times, Lamont Watts, the owner of 95.1 Club Steppin, said on his station’s Facebook page that they could no longer play his music.

Watts said in their statement that their business includes women who work there, and they all have women in their families, as friends, and in relationships, so by all good consciousness, he can’t allow having the embattled R & B legend’s music on their platform.

When he spoke with the publication, Watts said he has actually gotten mixed reactions from listeners, many of which have thanked him, while others have condemned the station for throwing a man under the bus who hasn’t been proven guilty yet.

Watts went on to say to the newspaper that he and the rest of the executives decided it would be best to cut ties with R. Kelly due to the current political and cultural landscape, especially with the rise of the #MeToo movement.

He then wrote on the Facebook page in response to commenters that the station doesn’t judge anyone. It was simply a way of standing up for women who have voiced the abuse they endured at the behest of a far more powerful man.

Earlier this month, Lifetime’s brand new docu-series, Surviving R. Kelly, featured interviews with 50 different people, and it aired during a span of five days. It brought in approximately 2 million viewers per episode, and the reaction has been quite emotional.

For one, many of R. Kelly’s collaborators and friends have turned their backs on him entirely, including Chance The Rapper, John Legend, Chrissy Teigen, and several others.

As you may know, R. Kelly allegedly was married to a 15-year-old Aaliyah when he was 27-years-old, and Kelly also had a child pornography charge for which he was inevitably exonerated.

Now, he’s been facing allegations that he supposedly holds women hostage in his house. However, multiple police officers have visited with him at his homes and at the Trump Tower last Friday in Chicago, and they found no evidence of wrongdoing after speaking with Kelly and the women. Police officials in Atlanta are also investigating the singer’s behavior.
