Late in December 2019, the Red Hot Chili Peppers revealed John Frusciante was returning to the band after an extended hiatus, a time in which he was replaced by Josh Klinghoffer.
It’s been approximately one month now that fans are aware of the lineup change, and for the most part, the band hasn’t revealed much other news, except for festival dates in 2020. In an interview with Rolling Stone, Chad Smith, the drummer of the band, revealed little tidbits about the group’s future in the midst of promoting his visual art exhibition.
Smith claims he was given “strict orders” about the interview: that being to not speak about the band. However, Chad did reveal a bit of information about the Red Hot Chili Peppers. Chad confirmed John was back in the group, which everyone knows, before going on to say everyone in the group was thrilled about making a new album.
As fans of the iconic rock band know, the band originally featured John from 1988 until his departure in 1992. Following a six-year hiatus, John returned once again in 1998 before leaving again in 2009. Afterward, Josh Klinghoffer replaced him.

Stereogum reported on the 15th of December that nearly 10 years exactly after John first quit the band in 2019, he rejoined again in the final month of 2019. Josh Klinghoffer joined the Red Hot Chili Peppers for two records, including I’m With You, and The Getaway.
In a social media statement from almost one month ago, the group announced they were parting ways with Klinghoffer. The ending of the statement confirmed John Frusciante was coming back to RHCP, stating they were re-introducing John to the group with “great excitement and full hearts.”
As it was previously reported, John last played on 2006’s record, Stadium Arcadium, which was a huge hit at the time. Reportedly, the group has been back in the studio over the last year, with it being somewhat unclear if John had any involvement in the new record.
Just this past month, Klinghoffer released his first record, To Be One With You, under the pseudonym, Pluralone.
