Ryan Phillippe is currently facing assault charges brought by his ex-girlfriend, Elsie Hewitt. And now, Hewitt is dragging Phillippe’s ex-wife Reese Witherspoon into the court battle.
According to The Blast, Hewitt is suing Phillippe for $1 million over the alleged assault – which he denies – and she has added Witherspoon to her list of witnesses who will be testifying at the October 15th trial.

It’s unclear what kind of questions Hewitt will have for the Oscar-winning actress, but Phillippe also wants to ask his ex-wife some questions during cross-examination, and the court has scheduled Witherspoon to testify for one hour. This comes after Phillippe tried to prevent Hewitt from deposing Witherspoon in the case. He also tried to prevent Hewitt from obtaining text messages between him and his ex-wife.
Phillippe argued that he was married to Witherspoon from 1999 to 2007, and her testimony isn’t relevant in the case.
“Although divorced, they maintain a pleasant relationship with each other and their child. The nature of their marriage and its termination, as well as their ongoing relationship, could only be used in this trial for improper purposes,” wrote Phillippe’s attorney.
Hewitt first filed the lawsuit against Phillippe two years ago. She says that she went to his house to get her belongings after they got into a fight and he assaulted her. Hewitt claims that Phillippe was upset when she arrived and grabbed her arm “so tightly that his grip left heavy bruises.” She also claims he “threw her down a staircase as hard as he could.”
Phillippe and Hewitt are also scheduled to take the stand, as well as Phillippe’s ex-girlfriend Paulina Slagter, who Hewitt believes has some similar stories to share about the actor.

In addition to the assault, Hewitt also claims Phillippe has a drug problem and he abuses cocaine, ecstasy, psychedelic mushrooms, and steroids.
Phillippe has denied all of Hewitt’s accusations, saying he has always treated her with kindness and respect. He believes the lawsuit is her attempt at extortion.
Despite their split more than a decade ago, Phillippe says that he and Witherspoon are still friends and raising their two kids, Ava and Deacon, has been a top priority.
